This session will present a “broad stroke” picture of sex therapy supervision, presenting different models of supervision and a wide variety of types of cases that illustrate the important aspects of the supervisor/supervisee relationship.  Issues of transference and countertransference will be addressed, as light will be shed upon the relationship that exists between clients and their therapist.  Consideration will be given to assumptions about race, gender, sexual orientation, ability and other sociocultural constructs that enable or obstruct the therapeutic process.  Telephonic, Internet and other therapeutic media will be considered.  Attention will also be afforded to AASECT Supervision Requirements and practice expectations. Ethical issues will be addressed throughout the workshop.

To be clear, this will be a class about supervision and professional consultation, rather than actual clinical case supervision – that being said, attendees may feel free to bring up challenging or difficult cases for discussion during the workshop.

Learning Objectives

• Describe one supervisory technique that can improve treatment skills with clients.
• Name three ethical concerns that might arise in the course of sex therapy.
• Name one pro and one con for conducting long-distance supervision.
• State three reasons why it is important for sex therapists to have supervisors.
