This workshop will use themes of “Power. Pleasure. Politics. Practice” to illuminate how each dynamic operates as a barrier and portal to diversity, participation, and engagement in BDSM communities, with Black women. Sex geeks, clinicians, educators, researchers, and other members of the community will benefit from this workshop as It is informed by the media, clinical practice, and critical race theory.
Learning Objectives
List four barriers that inhibit black women’s expression and participation in BDSM communities.
Describe how one would Support, and advocate for black women’s participation and expression in BDSM communities using portrayals of at least two, ethical, women, BDSM practitioners.
List Identify four benefits to creating more inclusive and indigenized BDSM spaces for Black women.
Activity Schedule:
1 hour: Description of BDSM, prevalence of Black women’s ideals, participation, and expression in these communities in comparison to mainstream practitioners of BDSM
45 minutes: Critical race theory and implications for making BDSM more inclusive
15 minutes: Resources on where to locate diverse, examples of Black woman identifying BDSM practitioners
