Clear

Treating sexual trauma is a well-researched component of trauma therapy, yet there is still a glaring omission in treating the recovery of sexual health after sexual trauma. Sexual trauma does not impact just one aspect of survivors’ lives, but rather overshadows aspects of mental, physical, sexual and relational wellbeing, including the impairment of desire and eroticism. Most trainings for therapists on sexual trauma lack a holistic, mind body focus on the reintegration of sexual health. In essence, therapists are effective within the initial stages of the recovery process, but lack the training necessary to help their clients rediscover—or discover for the first time—their sexual health distinct from their trauma, inclusive of the tools needed to maintain relational vitality. This process of sexual and relational recovery must occur through a sex-positive lens based on the client’s needs rather than the inherent beliefs and biases of the therapist, no matter how well meaning. This certification in the treatment of sexual trauma will comprehensively inform therapists and assist them in helping their clients find their own sexual and erotic template. Rather than treating healthy sexuality as an afterthought in sexual trauma recovery, therapists will have embedded, sex-positive protocols to utilize in their client’s integrated healing.
