Topic: Teetering on the Razor’s Edge: Shame, Ambivalence, Vulnerability, and Attachment in Kink Play
An early 30s heterosexual Caucasian woman finds herself ambivalent about kink play. On one hand she desires to feel submissive, on the other hand she often feels overwhelmed with shame and doubt, exploding in anger, sometimes in the middle of play. At these times, her partner feels frustrated and unfairly blamed. In this case study, we will examine the interplay of shame, ambivalence, vulnerability, and attachment to gain a differential understanding of the client’s subjective experience. Then we will take a look at a number of client-centered interventions that allowed her to construct meaning and a sense of empowerment to define her own sexuality.
