Description:

In this workshop participants will learn how therapists work with transgender/gender expansive children/youth and their families. The family dynamics and what influences these dynamics will be discussed as well as the clinical impact of social location and intersections of identity on families experiencing a child’s gender affirming transition.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the roles of the therapist when working with transgender/gender expansive children/youths and their families
  • Demonstrate an awareness and comprehension of gender dysphoria, gender noise, and the influence of family dynamics
  • Describe the clinical impact of social location and intersections of identity on families experiencing a child’s gender affirming transition
  • Describe the clinical issues often experienced by families when experiencing a child/youth’s gender affirming social or medical transition
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the key components, ethical issues, and challenging aspects of the gender affirmative model in clinical practice
  • List the key components of resiliency in families and describe interventions that help build family resilience.

Presenter Bio:

Shawn is a white, gay, married, visually disabled, man who was assigned female at birth and uses male (he/him) pronouns. He is clinical psychologist & WPATH GEI SOC7 Certified Member & Mentor in private practice in Northern CA specializing in family therapy with couples, families, and individuals across the lifespan, with a particular focus on transgender/gender expansive youth and their families. He is also a researcher, educator, and a professor for the Rockway Institute at Alliant International University where he teaches graduate courses in LGBTQ psychology and family systems. He is the founder & director of the Gender Health Training Institute and the TransFamily Alliance and serves on the board of local and national family therapy organizations, is active member of several transgender affirmative therapy organizations, and the author of several articles and book chapters on gender, sexuality, and family work.
