As new technologies arrive and alter our most personal experiences, we are witnessing a transformation in how we connect with one another.  Human sexuality, in all of its idiosyncratic expressions, has long been a driver of technological innovation. It is no surprise that the latest high-tech wave is pushing desire into uncharted terrain, expanding human sexuality and stretching the cultural and physical boundaries of how we have sex, and who—or what—we have sex with.

What do these developments mean for therapists, and how will they change the ways in which we engage with and treat clients? Rather than sitting idly by and fearing these new immersive technologies will push people further apart, we can actively learn to use them in ways that foster healthy individual and relational sexuality, and encourage a greater degree of erotic empathy. The focus of this latest sextech transformation is not on what technology can do to us, but what it can do for us—its potential to positively transform our humanity, changing the way we see ourselves and behave as sexual beings.

Schedule
30 min: Introductions

1 hr: PowerPoint presentation (with handouts) including history of sextech, somatic technology, VR/AR, teledildonics, sex dolls vs. sexbots, AI

85 min: Discussion of immersive technology content creation, sex therapy/education in the adult entertainment market, latest immersive technology pleasure products, and expanding sex positive lens for digisexuals and other nontraditional sextech uses

45 min: Work in triads to discover clinical applications and implications for various sextech prescriptions

20 min: Closing comments and Q & A

 

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Holly Richmond is a Somatic Psychotherapist, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT), Certified Sex Therapist (CST) and Associate Director of Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. This unique combination of credentials enables her to focus on clients’ cognitive processes as well as mind-body health. In addition to teaching numerous sexual health-related subjects, she works with women, men, couples, and gender-diverse individuals on relationship and sexuality issues, offering sex therapy and sexual health coaching nationally and internationally. Her treatment specialties include low libido, sexual dysfunction, compulsive sexuality (often called “addiction”), desire discrepancies in couples, recovery from sexual assault and abuse, and alternative/non-traditional sexual expression. Her newly released book Reclaiming Pleasure: A Sex-Positive Guide for Moving Past Sexual Trauma and Living a Passionate Life (New Harbinger, Oct. 2021) is an innovative look at both somatic and psychological factors in survivors’ erotic recovery.
