Description

This course examines the common place practice of withholding sexuality education and sexual health services for developmentally disabled (DD) people. These actions result in excessive restrictions, ongoing assaults on sexual rights for DD people, and disproportionate uses of power and exploitation against DD people.

We will propose strategies that sexual health practitioners can use to support healthy sexuality for DD people.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • List 2 barriers to communicating about sexuality with developmentally disabled (DD) people.
  • Explain the potential risks to DD people that make providing honest sexuality information and services compelling and urgent.
  • Discuss ways to challenge limiting beliefs and expectations about DD people that threaten their sexual rights and healthy expression.
  • List 2 strategies to support healthy sexuality for DD people
