Answer: The full program can be completed in 12 months. Or, you can do it over a longer period, if needed. It’s YOUR CHOICE! AASECT does require that you are under supervision for a minimum of 18 months prior to submitting your application. Modern Sex Therapy Institutes’ requirements are 12 months.

• Sixty (60) hours of training specific to Sex Therapy (Modern Sex Therapy Institutes offers all of these CE Hours. See above).
• If you are not ready to begin the certification process, feel free to take courses you are interested in and you can use them later.
• Fourteen (14) hours of Sexuality Attitude Reassessment (SAR) (Modern Sex Therapy Institutes offers this several times a year).
• All candidates MUST be supervised by AASECT certified supervisors. Modern Sex Therapy Institutes has three Certified Supervisors to choose from.

AASECT Certifications
AASECT CERTIFIED SEX THERAPIST
Potential AASECT Certified Sex Therapists are mental health professionals, trained to provide in-depth psychotherapy, who have specialized in treating clients with sexual issues and concerns. They are either licensed, or in the absence of required licensure, they are certified, registered, or clinical members of a national psychotherapy organization. Sex therapists work with sexual concerns and, in addition, where appropriate, are prepared to provide comprehensive and intensive psychotherapy over an extended period of time in more complex cases. Minimum degree required is a Master’s degree. The sex therapy certification program is for all students that are currently enrolled in a mental health graduate program and mental health professionals who are licensed in their states or provinces to provide mental health care and have completed graduate school for clinical training in their professional area. Applicable professional degrees may include a PhD, MD, MSW, or MA, Masters in MFT. Potential AASECT Certified Sexuality Educators are typically leading workshops, teaching classes, or organizing and facilitating seminars. Sexuality educators may teach in the classroom at the elementary, secondary, and higher education levels. They may also provide education for groups of children, adolescents, or adults, training for professionals, and outreach and education in community-based, healthcare, corporate, and faith-based settings. Sexuality educators also may design and conduct workshops, courses, and seminars; contribute to the sexuality education literature; develop curriculum; plan and administer programs; deliver lectures; and provide one-on-one client education sessions. The minimum degree required is a Bachelor’s degree.
