Sex Therapy Education, Section A

When sex is more than just sex, many therapists find themselves lacking confidence about how to properly address these issues with your gay clients. This workshop will provide a detailed overview about norms that gay males experience while growing up, how dissociation in the body is a normal coping mechanism, and how the norms of the gay sub culture results in performance pressures and low self-esteem. Participants will learn a holistic model focusing on mind body interventions and gain confidence with how to address these issues in their work. This workshop will provide information about LGBTQ+ acceptance for teens, young adults and discuss intersectionality between this population and various cultures.
This training will include a didactic lecture and discussion of cases.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe 3 unique issues about growing up gay
  2. Discuss how to address issues regarding growing up gay in sessions with clients.
  3. Discuss intersectionality of LGBTQ+ youth and ethnicity, and how to promote accepting behaviors within the families and communities.
  4. Describe 2 clinical skills to help clients accept their LGBTQ+ clients and communities, and to minimize micro-aggressions in treatment.
