Description:

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities want and need sexuality education, butare often not taught about sexuality and relationships due to myths and misconceptions. We also know the rate of sexual abuse among people with I/DD is very high, 7 times higher than the general population. One way to support healthy, satisfying relationships is by teaching relationship and sexuality education. In this presentation, we will explore what is sexual self-advocacy, myths about people with I/DD and relationships, the latest statistics, and hear self-advocate voices about why they want and need relationships and sexuality education.

Define sexual self-advocacy.
Explain the specific issues people with developmental disabilities face regarding sexuality, disability history and culture.
Explore what topics need to be covered.
Examine effective skills and tools for teaching and working with this population.

Speaker Bio:

Katherine McLaughlin, M.Ed., AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator, is the Founder, CEO and Lead Trainer for Elevatus Training. As a national expert on sexuality and I/DD she trains professionals, and parents as well as individuals to become sexual self-advocates, and peer sexuality educators. She is the author of, Sexuality Education for People with Developmental Disabilities curriculum.
